Laparoscopy is a surgical technique in which small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert a special instrument called a laparoscope. This is a thin tube with a video camera on the end that allows the doctor to see inside the abdomen on a large screen. Laparoscopy is used to diagnose and treat various conditions such as cysts, adhesions, fibroids or infections. It can also be used to confirm the presence of endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is found in other parts of the abdomen.
Hysteroscopy involves inserting an instrument called a hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This is also a thin tube with a video camera at the end that allows the doctor to observe the inside of the uterus on a monitor. Hysteroscopy is used to examine and treat problems such as fibroids (abnormal growths in the uterus), polyps (protruding tissue in the uterus), scarring, or other abnormalities of the uterus. A small sample of tissue may also be taken for a biopsy.
